There is a slight change in format regarding virtual differencing hard disks in Windows Server 2008 R2 in comparison to Windows Server 2008. If you try to move differencing hard disks from R2 version to non R2 version you will get error stating that hard disk is damaged or unreadable.
To successfully move virtual hard disk from R2 version to non R2 version you will need to install this patch, KB971677. This patch applies only to Windows Server 2008 and it does not apply to R2 version.
