Microsoft Diagnostics & Recovery Toolset is part of the MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack) suite, which also contains MED-V (Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization), AGPM (Advanced Group Policy Management), AIS (Microsoft Asset Inventory Service) and DEM (System Center Desktop Error Monitoring).

DART comes in several different versions for different operating systems (Windows XP, Vista and Server 2008) and architectures (32 or 64 bit). Currently, there is BETA version of DART for Windows 7. Once you create boot CD-s containing DART, you can use it to recover data, troubleshoot and repair start up options, change local account passwords, view event logs, securely delete data from the hard drive and many more nice things. MDOP, and DART as part of it, is only available to SA (Software Assurance) subscribers.

In the video below, you can see how DART looks when you boot your computer from it and what tools are available. This particular demo shows DART 6.0 for 32 bit Vista. Be aware that DART try’s to do auto recovery procedures on selected installation of operating system. This can take up to 15 minutes, and just after it finishes you can access DART tools mentioned above.

I have a TechNet Plus subscription but I can’t find the beta version of DART that works with Windows 7. Do you know if it is on there somewhere?

There is BETA version on site. It is not complete DART version, I think that only MED-V is available.
